Micah Koch Fundraiser
Thank you for your support of our Firefighter and Friend Micah Koch. One July 4th, Micah was severely injured following the annual fireworks display and is under medical care with an expected extended recovery period. A GoFundMe page has been created to support Micah and his family. Thank you in advance for your support.
July 4th Incident Details
Shortly after the fireworks event on July 4 was completed, our pyrotechnic team began its post-event safety procedures at the firing site to ensure there were no misfires or “duds.” The team first observed the required waiting period to allow for any delayed ignitions. They then secured the firing system and began a systematic inspection of the mortar tubes. This inspection includes visually checking each mortar tube to confirm that it is empty or shows evidence that the shell had fired. At some point during this inspection, a mortar exploded, causing injury to Micah.

Pyrotechnic crew members on scene were within feet of Micah at the time of the incident and, fortunately, were unharmed. They immediately began caring for Micah and followed the established emergency notification plan. Emergency units were already on scene and responded within seconds, with no delay in care. Life Flight was initially requested and had an estimated arrival time of 45 minutes. AMR Multnomah and Clackamas Counties responded quickly, and thanks to the care provided on site, Micah was transported to a Portland-area hospital while continuing to receive treatment from AMR and Estacada Fire Paramedics.

Following the incident, with assistance from the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office the scene was secured to allow for an investigation and to ensure the site remained undisturbed. All mortars were watered down, and no additional hazards were identified. On July 5, the Clackamas County Bomb Squad was requested to complete the proper ordnance disposal and insure there were no additional hazards.

Micah has already undergone one successful surgery and is currently recovering. He has a long road to full recovery and has shared his gratitude for the outpouring of support. We also ask that the fire station and its members be allowed to remain uninterrupted so they can continue responding to calls and begin the process of recovering from this unfortunate event.
