Estacada Mobile Training Facility:In August of 2010 the staff at Estacada Fire District started work on a project which would drastically improve our capability to provide training to the community’s firefighters and emergency managers. The project that our staff envisioned was to find a way to replace our aging wooden training structure. The current facility was hand built in the 1980’s by the Timberlake Job Corps. It served the District well for many years but had eventually become rotted in several key areas due to moisture on the wooden components. This irreversible damage caused the structure caused areas of the structure to be deemed un-useable and was barricaded off. The District needed to explore option for replacing the structure so that realistic, hands-on fire and rescue training could be provided to staff. The solution was found in applying for a grant from the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) called the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG). The District applied for the grant and asked for $256,025.00 of Federal funding which was to be matched by $13,475.00 (5%) from the District. On February 18th, 2011 word was received that the DHS had awarded the grant to Estacada Rural Fire District. Soon after staff began working on specification for the unit and finding a vendor to construct the facility. Fire Training Structures in Phoenix, AZ was selected as the vendor to construct the custom built training facilities. These new facilities took about 4 months to construct and are now installed at the Districts training grounds in Estacada. The new facility features; a Live Fire Burning Room, Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Confidence Maze, confined space rescue props, technical rope rescue rappelling tower, forcible entry doors, standpipes, sprinkler systems, artificial non toxic smoke generation equipment, behind the wall fire prop, three stories of working space and several other props. Another large prop was installed which serves as an Incident Command Training Facility where emergency managers can learn how to effectively manage a large scale incident such as an earthquake, flood, major fire, or terrorist event under the National Incident Management (NIMS) system. |
